A BIOTECNOLOGIA E A ECONOMIA POLÍTICA DE SUA DEFINIÇÃO

Resumo

Por causa da impossibilidade de uma definição consensual de biotecnologia, a qual está associada à complexidade da conciliação de interesses divergentes, faz-se uma revisão do conceito a partir de dicionários, especialistas e instituições. Apresenta-se a "velha" biotecnologia; em seguida, diferencia-se a "velha" da "nova" biotecnologia, e então analisa-se a batalha desempenhada por interessados em definir a biotecnologia. Qual definição triunfará? O conflito de interesses implícito na controvérsia revela apenas uma diminuta parte do "iceberg" de contradições de ordem econômica e política mais profundas - existentes e potenciais - da chamada biorrevolução.

THE BIOTECHNOLOGY AND THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF ITS DEFINITION
ABSTRACT
Due to the impossibility of a consensual definition for biotechnology, which is attained to the complexity of agreement within diverse interests, a revision of the concept is made on the basis of dictionaries, experts and institutions. The "old" biotechnology is reported and the "old" and "new" biotechnologies are discerned; afterwards, the battle performed by partners in order to stablish a biote-chnology definition is analysed. Which definition will be the best? The disagreement of interests built in the controversy raises only a small part of an iceberg of deeper economical and political contradictions - existing and potential - related to the so called biorevolution.
