ADOÇÃO DE PRÁTICAS AGRÍCOLAS SUSTENTÁVEIS: ESTUDO DE CASO DE UM SISTEMA DE PRODUÇÃO HORTÍCOLA FAMILIAR EM AMBIENTE DE MONTANHA

Resumo

Por meio da metodologia de análise dos sistemas agrários, determinaram-se as condições agroeconômicas para que um sistema de produção tenha capacidade de mudar alguns dos seus componentes para elevar seu patamar de sustentabilidade. Analisa-se a dinâmica agrária geral da região sudoeste de Nova Friburgo (RJ), onde a maioria dos produtores são pequenos agricultores familiares, tendo como principal característica o uso intensivo de mão de obra e de insumos químicos. Foram feitas 49 entrevistas com técnicos e produtores para descrever a dinâmica do desenvolvimento agrícola regional. Estudou-se mais profundamente propriedade representativa de um dos sistemas de produção. Verificou-se que a partir da segunda metade do século XX, as práticas agrícolas transformaram-se e simplificaram-se com a intensificação da produção de hortaliças. Atualmente, três sistemas de produção têm impacto ambiental elevado. O estudo de caso traz importantes informações para entender os mecanismos que influem no comportamento do produtor. Foi possível definir os obstáculos à adoção de práticas alternativas com menor impacto ambiental e delimitar as condições agroeconômicas para a integração de novas práticas. A análise também revelou que os sistemas de produção possuem capacidade de manter pequeno sistema de criação (suínos, galinhas) com o objetivo de aumentar a sustentabilidade econômica.

ADOPTION OF SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES: A CASE STUDY OF A FAMILY HORTICULTURAL PRODUCTION SYSTEM IN MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT

ABSTRACT

By means of the methodology of analysis of farming systems, this paper determines the agroeconomic conditions allowing a production system to modify some of its components, to reach a higher degree of sustainability. It analyzes the development of the agrarian system of the south-western area of Nova Friburgo (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), where most producers are small family farmers whose main characteristic is the intensive use of manpower and chemical inputs. There were 49 interviews with technicians and producers to describe the dynamics of regional agricultural development. The study focused on one particular farm, which represents one of the production systems. Results show that from the second half of the 20th century, the agricultural practices have been changed and simplified due to the intensification of the vegetable crop production. Currently, three production systems have a high environmental impact. The study case brings important information that will enable understanding what are the mechanisms influencing the producer’s behaviour. The study identified the obstacles to the adoption of alternative practices with less environmental impact than the conventional ones, and defined the agro-economic conditions for the integration of new practices. The analysis also highlights the capacity of production systems to maintain a small raising system (hogs, poultries) to improve economic sustainability.
